The Netherlands

The Netherlands was the first map that I completed for the Drawn Out Journey series. This was one of three maps that was actually completed on the cycling journey itself, during a period of time I was laid up due to illness. The maze begins where the Hook of Holland is and meanders its way across the nation in a similar direction to my route. Like the Germany map, this map is a heavy representation of my own experiences during the journey.

Netherlands detail (girl with pearl earring)

Welcome to the Netherlands! My favourite burger cafe and hotel are featured to the top centre.

My favourite element of this image is the Girl with the Pearl Earring painting. It is less than a centimetre in height and sits directly below a drawing of the SS Rotterdam, an old liner that I explored during my full day in the city it was named after. The top of a shared house that I stayed in when I found myself in Nijmegen is featured to the bottom right of the image above. This piece, like most of the maps in the series is A4 in size.
