Experienced II

This drawing is a similar proposition to Experienced I in that it is a composition of the towers and skyscrapers that I have personally ascended.  It is A2 in size because it is depicting taller buildings and from left to right they are the Moscow State University Tower, the Scotia Bank Plaza tower in Toronto, the Tour Montparnasse in Paris and the St Michaelis Church in Hamburg. The tallest structure in the white outline to the centre of the image is the St Peters Basilica in Rome and contained within this is Christopher Wren’s St Pauls Cathedral in London. In turn, the negative space inside the St Pauls drawing is the outline of a council tower block.

‘Y Phone, Y Not’

Just like the other drawings in the Imaginary Buildings series, this piece contains light commentaries on cultural norms of the time. In the example above, the popularity and venerated nature of the iPhone is lightly mocked with a ‘Y Phone, Y Not’ poster. Technology in boxes sits below in a damp storeroom. This piece also is a commentary on the cross section of economic realities, culminating in the penthouse flats of the nouveau riche on the 67th to 70th floors in the centre tower. This piece reiterates the freer nature of my earlier works, after all it would be pointless to stick a reference to the iPhone in the middle of a maze depicting the history of Communism in Bulgaria.

Hall of Soviet Monuments detail (level 24)

The differences between Communism and Capitalism feature heavily in the Moscow State University section of the piece. For example, on level 37 there is an electrical shop called ‘Asteroid Electrical’ in a Capitalist state to the left of the image, and a Communist electrical shop to the right. Above these are supermarkets represented in their economic regimes.

Capitalism vs Communism

Below these, on level 27 is a hall (pictured in the image above) containing paintings of technological marvels made during the Soviet Union. From left to right they are: Tetris (the popular computer game), ‘Concordski’ (the Soviet Concorde which was called the Tupolev Tu-144) the Sputnik space capsule and the fire extinguisher. The upper levels of the drawing contain luxury apartments and a beach, inserted alongside and above a giant clock mechanism.

Inside the clock mechanism on level 37

The final image shows the whimsical grandfather clock repair shop situated inside the weight of a giant pendulum clock. In the centre of the image is a sign titled the ‘Directory of Reality which reads as follows:

Floors 37 to 48 – The Clock

Floors 43 to 53 – Student Life

Floors 54 to 60 – On Holiday

Floors 61 to 66 – Middle

Floors 67 to 70 – Riches
